Response threshold model of division of labour in a ponerine ant

چکیده
A simple response threshold model is used to explain a pattern of division of labour observed in the ponerine ant Ectatomma ruidum, where it was found that prey-foraging behaviour could be subdivided into two categories: stinging and transporting. Stingers kill live prey and transporters carry the dead prey’s corpses back to the nest. The model can reproduce all the dynamical patterns observed in experiments by changing the same parameters as in the experiments.

Caste and Task Allocation in Ants
Group living is a widely adopted strategy by many organisms and given the advantages offered by a social lifestyle, such as increased protection from predators or increased ability for resource exploitation, a wide variety of animals have adopted a social lifestyle. Arguably none have done this more successfully than the social insects. Indeed their efficient division of labour is often cited a...

This paper reports a study of the task partitioning observed in the ponerine ant Ectatomma ruidum, where prey-foraging behaviour can be subdivided into two categories: stinging and transporting. Stingers kill live prey and transporters carry prey corpses back to the nest. Stinging and transporting behaviours are released by certain stimuli through response thresholds; the respective stimuli for...

High relatedness promotes the evolution of sociality because potentially costly cooperative behaviours are directed towards kin. However, societies, such as those of social insects, also benefit from genetic diversity, e.g. through enhanced disease resistance and division of labour. Effects of genetic diversity have been investigated in a few complex eusocial species. Here, we show that genetic...

The success of social insects can be largely attributed to division of labour. In contrast to most social insects, many species with simple societies contain workers which are capable of sexual reproduction. Headed by one or a few reproductive individuals, subordinate workers form a dominance hierarchy, queuing to attain the reproductive role. In these species task allocation may be influenced ...

shortcoming because it would have allowed to compare conditions under which potential conflicts become real conflicts (e.g. the conflict over sex ratio) and those where they don't (e.g. conflict over queen rearing) — a crucial criterion for the superorganism. The final chapters are devoted to the Ponerine ants — a subfamily characterized by its staggering diversity and by its primitive social o...
